10 Month Milestone Check List!

Each month I review my copy of What to Expect in the First Year and see how my Monster is rating on the scale. This month I am admittedly a couple days late, but I don't think Monster has hit any major milestones in the last couple of days.

Each month is divided into categories as follows;

By the end of this month, your baby...
...should be able to:

  • Stand holding on to someone or something thing: Check! He's been able to do this for months now
  • Pull up to a standing position from sitting: Check! The first time he did this was three weeks ago in the bath tub of all places. The first week he'd show us his new skill only if we were lucky. Now, he's a big big show off.
  • Object if you take a toy away: Check, that is if you mean everything but a toy. He almost hissy-fits when you take the remotes, or gaming controllers away.
  • Say "mama" or "dada" indiscriminately: Check, for a long long time now.
  • Play Peek-a-boo: Check, this is a hilarious game if you see Monster pulling something in front of his face making an abrupt "Ah! Ah! Ah!" noise it's because he's playing peek-a-boo with you, or one of our pets. He doesn't quite get that you pull the fabric away from your face and say the "Boo!" or in his words "Ah!"
...will probably be able to:
  • Get into a sitting position from stomach: Check! Basically, as soon as he could crawl (8 Month 2 days) he knew how to do this.
  • Play patty-cake (clap hands) or wave bye-bye: Check. He can do both of these things but he chooses when to do them. He usually doesn't wave anymore until after the person is out of sight, as for clapping he does it when he likes something. It's so cute!
  • Pick up a tiny object with any part of the thumb and finger: Check, for a long long time now!
  • Walk holding on to furniture (cruise): Check! For about two weeks now he's been a cruising maniac. Pictures coming soon!
  • Understand the word "no" but not always obey it: Check, he obeys it for about 30 seconds and then continues with whatever bad thing he was about to do. Rotten baby! ;)
...may possibly be able to:
  • Stand alone momentarily: Check. Pictures coming soon!
  • Say "dada" or "mama" discriminately: Half? I know he can say Dada discriminately, as for mama, I'm not so sure. He did call for me from his crib but that was only once.
...may even be able to:
  • Indicate wants in ways other than crying: Check. Monster rarely cries until he hurts himself, he is usually just "communicating" in his own way.
  • "Play ball" (roll a ball back to you): Check, we haven't actually tried it with a ball, but he'll roll one of his trucks back to you.
  • Drink from a cup independently: Check, he is more then capable of doing this, but I don't leave him to his own devices. He tends to throw things when he's done with them.
  • Pick up a tiny object neatly with the tips of his thumb and forefinger: Check, Monster has had the pincer grasp perfected since he was a young'n .
  • Stand alone well: No, certainly not. He can stand alone for about 30 seconds max.
  • Use immature jargoning (gibberish that sounds like the baby made up a foreign language): Check. Monster talks all the time. He points while say things and I wish they were words so I could talk to him.
  • Say one word other then "mama" or "dada": Check. He says "Dawt" which translated is "Dog", that's all I've picked up on though. Lola Puggins is Monsters best friend so it doesn't surprise me that he'd want to talk to her, or about her.
  • Respond to a one step command with gesture: Check, he knows what "Come here!" means. That sounds terrible, like I'm training my 10 month old like a puppy, but it's true. He always comes!
  • Walk well: Definitely not!
Well, according to that checklist I am ecstatic about how Monster's development is just zipping on! He is doing so well! Every day is a new adventure, and a new milestone hit!

First Words?

I think we might have reached our next infant milestone! I know what you're thinking, "How can you "think" you met the next infant milestone? You either did or didn't?"...

Well, when it comes to recognizing an infants first words sometimes it's ridiculously hard! As a parent sometimes you have to really watch and listen for the signs. When I hear "mom mom mom" or "da-da-daddee" I have no doubt that Monster knows what he's saying and why. As for these new words, I'll break it down for you, and let you decide for yourself.

This morning Monster and I were playing on the floor after breakfast and Lola (my puggins) ran up to us and started sniffing around. Monster looked right at her and said "Dowt!", in shock I turned to him and said "Right! DOG!". Monster smirked his sly smirk and whispered "dowt" a couple more times towards Lola. I couldn't contain my glee! I can't be sure if that was his third real word or not but it still shows that he's developing more syllables and speech skills.

This fourth word I'm not sure if it's me being delusional because of my excitement over "dowt" or if I'm just hearing Monster now for the first time. We were walking around the house (I was holding his hands walking with him) and I was talking to him about walking when I heard him say "wawt". Are G and K sounds harder for infants to say when they're just learning?

I think it's time for this Mommy to get some reading material on infant and child speech development. Either way, words or baby jabbering I know it's something to look forward to in the very near future!

Updated on December 21st to add:
Ok, he definitely knows that "Dowt" means! He was saying it again this morning! I am SURE that he's saying Dog! :)

Crawling Maniac!

So, it's official! I have a crawling maniac on my hands!

It was a little over a month ago I posted photos of Monster on all fours in the crawling position. I had heard from a couple other moms that once the baby gets the balance down pat you can expect your little one to be crawling within two weeks.

Well, two weeks came and went and Monster was not crawling. We kept practicing but ultimately I wasn't overly anxious to have a baby "running" around and getting into everything. The issue stemmed from our laminate flooring. A baby trying to crawl + Pant-covered-knees slipping around on a laminate floor = One frustrated baby.

Sunday evening I decided to remove Monsters pants and see what happened. After a couple sold tries he was finally off and crawling! The best inspiration? The dog food in the dog food dishes!

He's not quite as fast with his pants on, but he's mastered crawling fully clothed too! It's been eventful around here to say the least, but so far I always know where Monster is because he laughs the whole time he's crawling as if to say "Just call me the KING!"

Dear Dog Food Companies...

Dear Dog Food Companies,

There seems to be an issue with your food. It is more appealing to my infant then it is my pug. However, my pug would like to request that you look into partnering up with Gerber Baby Food. She really enjoys the banana flavored Gerber Puffs for babies.

Thanks.

(Note: I do not encourage this as a tasty baby snack alternative. I'm just getting used to a scooting/semi-crawling Monster and had to take a picture of him with his paws in the "cookie" jar.)

7 Month Photo Shoot

In honor of Monster's 7 month "Birthday" we did our monthly photo shoot! Here are some photos that didn't end up being bloopers! I spent a couple minutes playing with the editing tools over at picnik.com. Enjoy! :)

He looks like he's cheering himself on for hitting 7 months old! So CUTE!

When I put him on the floor he automatically went up onto his hands and knees in the crawling position. It's really too bad that he flopped down onto his tummy, instead of taking his first few "steps".

An adorable picture of my boy! I always say he looks identical to his daddy, but in this picture it's so obvious!

I made this for our facebook fan page (visit us here!) in honor of my favorite holiday! Happy soon-to-be Halloween!

Oh My Crawling -- Photos!

Last night I blogged about how Monster had mastered balancing in the CRAWLING position. See that post here : Oh My Crawling!

In the meantime, please enjoy some photos of the epic event!
Note: He is not wearing pants because we have laminate flooring and it's pretty slippery when you have pants'd knees.

Wish me luck! Now the fun really starts! ;)

Oh My Crawling!

Just when I gave up on the idea of Monster starting to crawl....

Ok, I hadn't given up on it ever happening but I had given up on thinking he might hit that milestone earlier then average babies. I don't want to gloat but he's hit most of his milestones early or exactly on time... He is a genius. :)

Today Monster and I were diligently practicing his crawling by lying on the floor playing with his toys on our tummies. My evil mommy plan was to lie facing him with his toys just out of his reach. My plan failed because Monster didn't pay any attention to his toys, he was totally entranced by our pug pet LOLA.

That's when my plan changed. I decided to just put him on his hands and knees and see how'd he do. Well, all our practicing paid off because it worked!!

No, Monster didn't take his first crawling "steps" but he did balance on his hands and knees for a couple minutes! He balanced long enough for me to let go of him, run for the camera, and snap a few pictures of his glory!

Once he lost interest he pushed forward with his legs and ultimately fell onto his tummy again. It's his first step to independence, maybe crawling isn't that far off!

I better get serious about this baby proofing business!
