Yesterday was the first of our two family Thanksgiving dinners. Unfortunately because of the compressed shift Hubbs is on, Monster and I ventured over to my parents alone.
My mom tries her hardest to work her holiday meals around every ones work schedules, but unfortunately it doesn't always work out. This year our dinner was my parents, grandparents, soon-to-be-brother-in-law, Monster and I. I am slightly heartbroken that Hubbs didn't get to witness the first time Monster tried turkey, stuffing and a bite of cranberries.
Ok, you can slap me on the wrist for not only allowing Monster to try ONE new food. I couldn't help myself! Reasoning: He's tried chicken without an allergic reaction, chicken vs. turkey? Same thing! The only part of the stuffing he tried was soft bread hunks. He's had toast, turkey flavored break hunks vs toast? Same thing! He did fantastically! He LOVED Thanksgiving food!
Side note for Canadian moms: Why is everyone so absolutely obsessed with smothering everything in gravy? When I tell people Monster hates potatoes, they suggest gravy. You know what? I don't think smothering a carb with animal fat and salt is the right way to get him to eat something he hates! Ew. Monster is HUGE for his age and has gotten that way just from infant formula, fruit, veggies, lean meats, and infant cereals. He does not need any help gaining weight, especially from a food that is purely animal fat!
Ok, I'm done ranting...
Tomorrow will be Thanksgiving dinner number two at my in laws house. Normally they're pretty set on having Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday but since this is Monsters first Thanksgiving and Hubbs would be missing it completely they changed it for us. We are incredibly grateful! Mostly because turkey is fantastic! It's really no wonder Monster liked it so much, I think he had it 8 times while still in uteri. MmMmM Turkey!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thinking Thanksgiving
Our second fall family tradition is just a round the corner, Thanksgiving!
A typical Thanksgiving is usually a Sunday Turkey meal at my in laws. It's crammed full of food, people and love. With a family of 15 there is rarely enough stuffing to go around, but no one notices because were usually too busy joking and laughing.
Hubbs and I usually get two Thanksgivings though! A tradition that will continue for our family of 3 until we move into our much larger forever-dream-home. When that happens I plan to be hosting every single holiday meal, and just handing out open invites to each family member.
My mom does Thanksgiving Supper around everyones work schedule because our family is much smaller (a mere 7, 2 of those are new this year!). It's usually the Saturday or Monday.
I guess you can call this Thanksgiving tradition a temp-tradition for Monster. Especially because we're not even sure if Hubbs will be participating due to his crappy work schedule this month!

Family Vacation
Well, the countdown is finally over! Tomorrow morning (Friday) we hop into the truck and head towards.... The CANUCKS!
If you know my Hubbs, you know he loves his hockey, even more so he loves our "home team" the Vancouver Canucks. Their training camp this year is being held only 2 and a half hours from us in Penticton. Of course we have to go!
It's our "family vacation" this year. Ok, so we weren't very brave when it came to planning an extravagant family vacation knowing we'd have an infant with us.
The huge draw to the training camp isn't just Hubbs love for the team but also our suspicion that Monster will follow in his daddy's foot steps. Honestly, we plan on putting Monster in skating when he's 3, then eventually into hockey when he's old enough from there he can decide if he wants to continue playing the sport.
We plan on trying our hardest to meet some of our star players, and hopefully even getting photos and autographs! We have two Canuck style outfits for Monster to wear, and jerseys for us.
Stay tuned for updates from the road!

Fall Fair Parade
... Continued from Fall Fair -- Family Traditions
Saturday morning was the Fall Fair Parade. Something Hubbs and I have attended just to see our nieces and nephew lunging for flying candy and other goodies.
We got up early and went for breakfast just the three of us. Monster had a couple bites of my pancake, I think he liked everything but the textures of them. We arrived early at the fair to get a good spot on the street and saved some spots for others.
Family friends of ours were also with us, so Monster got to spend time with his girlfriend Buneez (her nickname for blogging purposes). Buneez investigated Hubbs new beard and spent some time getting to know her "in laws".
Monster fell asleep in his aunties arms just in time for the parade to start, needless to say he was startled awake by police sirens! He got to pet dogs, received slobbery puppy kisses, waved to the floats and people in the parade, he also got treats of his own that he can actually eat! Some floats this year were giving out fruit, a fantastical welcome change.
Once it ended I knew we had to continue to bring Monster each year not only so that it becomes a family tradition but so that he can plant is childhood foundation in our town.

Fall Fair Family Tradition
Our first true family tradition I would have to consider the Fall Fair, and the Fall Fair Parade.
Hubbs and I have been attending the fair yearly since our relationship began 5 years ago. It only makes sense that my love for fall and the fair would result in a family tradition I will carry forth with my children.
This year we went to the fair on Friday and spent the afternoon walking around, seeing the sites and visiting the animals with Monster. He got quite a kick out of the goats, and it must have been because the goats weren't shy. Most of them popped their heads up as soon as thy heard voices in hopes of pets and love.
As always the food booths smelled exquisite, but that's something Monster unfortunately didn't get to experience this year. I ate some mini doughnuts for him though.
I feel so lucky to have a good tempered, happy boy. It makes outings much easier, therefor the creation of family traditions much easier.

Fall Fair
When it comes to fall, I can not contain my excitement.
Everything about the season is absolutely amazing to me. Fall means relief from crazy hot summer temperatures, it means the leaves begin to change and drop, and Halloween is just around the corner.
Fall also means the Fair is coming to town! I often refer to the beginning of fall as "Fair Season". This year will be Monster's first fall, first "Fair Season".
The fair runs all weekend, but the beginning is marked with a parade first thing Saturday morning. Attending the fair (and spending far too much money...) and the Saturday morning parade has been a tradition for Hubbs and I since we've been together. A sweet tradition we plan on carrying on as our family grows.
I'm sure now that Monster is 6 months old, and a social-butterfly-flirt he will be thrilled to be in a large crowd with new sights, smells and sounds.
As a Fall Fair enthusiast, one can only hope Monster will happily share our tradition starting this year. Only 3 more sleeps until we find out for sure!

Trip to Herold's Park
On Sunday we took Monster for his first picnic to Herold's Park. In the past family picnics were a weekly occurrence for my husbands family but since all the "kids" are grown ups and have kids of their own, they are less often, but just as special.
Packing for a trip to the beach is like packing for a over night vacation when it comes to an infant. That might be dramatic, but I'm somewhat of an over packer. I'd really rather have too much stuff with me, then be without something I really need. Herold's Park is right on the Shuswap lake, so I knew there would be a swimming adventure involved in the picnic. I had to pack all the necessary items for the family (My family of three, not my husbands massive family) to eat, go swimming, dry off, change, hike (we didn't end up hiking), and be in the sun.
An hour of packing and checking off the lists in my head, we finally left our house, and only had to turn around once because I had forgotten something. Luckily it was only after driving for a minute, and not after getting to Herold's (which is about 20 minutes from our house). Only once? I'm impressed too! :)

We spent all afternoon playing in the water and at the beach with Monster, my 4 nieces and

nephew. Monster only enjoyed looking at the water, he wasn't a big fan of the cooler
temperature (Despite that adorable smile above). I guess for now, we'll have to stick to the temperature regulated pool at the recreation center! Once he got dried off and set up in his stroller with his toys, he really loved the beach!
Auntie TgM and Uncle CgM brought their Kayaks and took the older kids for a spin on the lake, which they thought was tres cool! The event came to an end when Hubbs found patches of incredibly itchy bug bites all over his body, so unfortunately we didn't get the chance to hike over to Margaret Falls. That will be an adventure for a different day, maybe one when I have a jogger stroller that can conquer the mighty mounts of the forested path!
