Every Wednesday my two oldest nieces come over and babysit my Monster. They take over for Hubbs around 2:30 in the afternoon and tire my tot out by hours of playing and laughing.
February 16th was no ordinary Wednesday, it was the day Monster took his first REAL steps!
Let me back track a little. On February 11th was my oldest nieces Birthday party. Typical Birthdays in our family means everyone joins in the fun, even if you're a teenager and all your friends are going to be there. ;) It was a cool snow covered evening where we all gathered at my in laws. The highlight of my night wasn't the cake (much to my surprise) but watching the two boys running back and forth the length of the rec room in the basement. Reed, my nephew was running full speed back and forth laughing non-stop. Monster on the other hand was stuck waddling behind him pushing a walker-toy.
Apparently, that was NOT good enough for Monster. Within three days he had completely learned to walk. He would no longer be left behind by his older cousin!
The reason I started this blog the way I did was because the first official steps where taken on a Wednesday. I walked in the door, K.Honor (my oldest niece) stood Monster up and had him walk over to my welcoming arms! I was ecstatic! I couldn't deny, however, how proud my K.Honor looked having witnessed Monster's first steps before anyone else in the world. A small part of my is saddened that because I chose to work, I miss milestones like this, but what would bring a family closer together then being able to share those moments with the ones you love?
If it couldn't be Hubbs or I, I'm glad it was K.Honor and Telly!

6 Month Check-Up
10 days ago Monster went for his 6 month vaccinations. Today, he had a regularly scheduled appointment with our family doctor to monitor his growth and development.
As always Monsters shots went well, he flirted with our nurse, squealed with delight whilst playing with his girlfriend and cried when the needle poked his little baby thigh. The routine if fairly straight forward, but this time we had to fill out a questionnaire regarding Monster's physical and social development. He scored well, and the majority of the time was spent discussing food and solids with our nurse.
Today's visit with the doctor wasn't very different. We weighed him (22lbs 8oz -- He actually lost an ounce since his shots) and measured him (29" Long) and discussed his diet and development. Both appointments we heard the term "Picture of Health" tossed around, because apparently being huge is a good thing when you're an infant (if only more weight was good for me too.. :P).
I'm happy with how my little Monster is progressing, now if only his growth would slow and level a little, so that he actually has the opportunity to enjoy his adorable infant fall wardrobe!

The Sixth Month Pt. 2
Continued from The Sixth Month Pt.1
By the end of this month your baby...
...may possibly be able to:
Stand holding onto someone or something - Check, he's still wobbly when he's holding on to anything but our hands.
Feed self a cracker - Check, just substitute mum mum for cracker
Object if you take toy away - I'm not sure, he just finds something else to do if we take a toy away.
Work to get a toy our of reach - Check
Pass a cube or other object from one hand to another - Check
Look for a dropped object - Check, he throws everything off his exersaucer.
Rake a raisin and pick it up in fist - Check, except replace raisin with Cheerio
Turn in the direction of a voice - Check, for like a hundred years.
Babble, combining vowel consonant sounds - No, he prefers to screech and squeal.
...may even be able to
Pull up to standing position from sitting - Not without a bunch of help, he tries though.
Get into a sitting position from tummy - Nope
Pick up tiny object with any part of thumb and finger - Check, but not regularly
Say Mama or Dada indiscriminately - I've heard him say "mum", but unfortunately not yet!
So it looks like he's pretty on par, and we have many things to practice for the end of the month.

When I found out I was pregnant via pee stick the first thing I did even before making a doctors appointment or telling our families was drive down to my local book store and buy the book What To Expect When You're Expecting. The book stayed at my bedside and became my bible over the 9 months I was pregnant.
Of course once Monster was born I would I turn to the pages within What to Expect in the First Year as my reference and monthly checklist.
I've decided to post Monster's progress monthly. Each month is separated into categories as follows:
By the end of this month, your baby...
...Should be able to:
Keep head level with body when pulled to sitting - Check, he's been able to do this for (at least two) months.
Say ah-goo or other vowel-consonant combinations - Check, Monster talks 90% of the day.
...will probably be able to:
Bear some weight on legs when held up-right - Check, for at least two months now.
Sit without support - Check, for just over a month
